The Nineteenth Amendment
"The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."
Ratified August 18, 1920
Welcome to ATX Celebrates Women’s Suffrage Centennial! The irony of planning a launch just as we began to face the worst of COVID-19 does not escape us. What began as an awareness campaign to hopefully inspire our Central Texas community to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment with events, film series, lectures, and exhibitions quickly hit a wall in March, which is exactly what the suffragists experienced in October 1918 when a global pandemic hit the US and all public events were banned. And with that, their rallies and campaign work stopped (and they were so close to the finish line!). Our hope is that we do what those brave and brilliant suffragists did to help our country heal: look beyond ourselves and do the work needed in our communities. It paid off for them. The suffragists’ journey for equality is rich and complex and we hope you’ll follow us on FB and IG for new stories each week.
