#Suffragist Susanna Madora Salter was the first woman ever to be elected to political office in the US, nominated by the men in Argonia, Nebraska who were against women voting and hoped to discourage her suffrage campaign in their community. She won by two-thirds majority vote. Her first City Council meeting was attended by a New York Sun reporter who documented on the style of her dress and hat and that she presided with great decorum, managing irrelevant discussion during the meeting with great parliamentarian ease. Publicity was global and she was paid $1 for her year’s service ($28 today). #VotesForWomen
