“Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History”

We all know that women have made significant, meaningful changes in society and their work is often forgotten. Many of us had a great-grandmother, great aunt (or great-great) who were part of the suffrage movement, or know someone in contemporary time who empowered others through their work, just like our ancestor suffragists.

I know of two great aunts on my Mother’s Father’s side of the family who were part of the women’s suffrage movement in the early 20th century; one was an active suffragist who lived in Chicago and whose name is listed on a marker honoring Chicago suffragists. The other great aunt lived in California and was proudly exercising her right to vote in state elections in 1912 (allowed in CA), eight years before the 19th Amendment was ratified!

We would love to share the story of the suffragist in your family or tell us about a woman you know who has lifted others up with her work. A photo and a brief statement is all we need to proudly include her in our HERstory gallery. EMAIL HERE

Thank you—we can’t wait to honor your heroine!
